Natural hair health activist and colour alchemist Reneé Potgieter shared tips for textured hair types.

As many are learning to embrace their naturally curly hair, Potgieter who has been in the industry for the last twenty-five years gives us six top tips to embracing your naturally textured hair.
The first on her list is to not over wash your hair. Some people wash their hair once a week, some more than once a week. The hair expert shared that it just depends on what you do daily. The more you wash your hair the more natural oils you lose unless you use a gentle shampoo or even a co-wash.

Secondly, it is always important to take care of your scalp. The dryer and coarser your hair, the less you need to wash your hair because the hair absorbs the oil from the scalp much better than when you have fine hair.

The natural oil from your scalp is the best for your hair. It is always best to be fussy with the products that you use on your hair. It is important to cleanse and nourish your hair but it is also important to be mindful of overusing products on your hair because the product build-up is real and can block oils from penetrating your hair and scalp.

Potgieter advises checking that products are sulphate, alcohol, and paraben-free before buying them. The fourth point that the natural hair expert makes is to use products with natural ingredients in them because it is rare that plant-based products cause build-up.

Using oils on your hair is also great as long as you can wash it out correctly or else your hair will become greasy. “Be gentle with interventions,” said Potgieter. She explained that you should be gentle when it comes to styling your hair because braids, blowouts, or straighteners can put some strain on your hair as well as your scalp. “If you walk away from a salon visit and your hair feels dryer, more fragile or your scalp hurts you need to re-evaluate your hair treatments,” added Potgieter.

The natural hair enthusiast shared that instead of braids, blowouts, or straightening of the hair, you can use accessories as an alternative. “Clip-in braids and extensions are the best alternatives for a little change without putting the hair under strain. Using wigs and wraps is a great way to get some variety in your look without lengthy salon visits and or chemical exposure. And of course, silk scarves and hats have always provided a great way to add to your look without causing any damage. Be careful, wigs that are worn too long don’t allow the scalp to breathe so remember to give your scalp a break in the evenings, especially if you wear your wig daily,” said Potgieter.

Simple ways to styling or just being aware of the products that you use on your hair can make a big difference.

Everyone has different hair, and what works on someone else’s hair may not work on yours but it is important to learn about your hair texture and learn to work with your texture not against it.
