Noordgesig awarded top achieving school

Present at the event to motivate the learners at the same time serving as proof that through determination, it is all possible was Orlando's very own Mpendulo Mfeka, who is the Wits SRC president.

“Good leadership is not about how many followers you have but how many leaders you create.” Orlando East leadership councilors along with Ward 29 councilor, Brenda Dammie, Ward 31 councilor, Bongani Dlamini and Ward 30 councilor, Setchaba Khumalo proved to be selfless leaders who aspire to create future leaders in learners, recognising them for their hard work and encouraging those still in school to do better.

They hosted an annual Grade 12 class of 2020 award giving ceremony for top achievers in Orlando and Noordgesig on Thursday, April 22. Usually, they go to each school awarding learners and the school for their achievements but due to COVID-19, this year’s event was held at the Noordgesig Secondary School since it was announced the top achieving school with 85% pass rate for Matric 2020 and other school’s top achievers were invited to the school.

Present at the event to motivate the learners at the same time serving as proof that through determination, it is all possible was Orlando’s very own Mpendulo Mfeka, who is the Wits SRC president.

Noordgesig Secondary School Principal, Derek Devereux and ward 29, councilor Brenda Dammie lift up a certificate and trophy awarded to the school for the best results.

“Prepare for life after matric. It is possible that you might get the best matric final results with distinctions and still not perform well when you get to varsity. If it happens, don’t be hard on yourself. There’s also a culture shock, you will find some students driving your mother’s dream car, don’t lose focus, and don’t forget the reason why you went there in the first place. Also, you need to remember that you will meet students who came from well-resourced schools, ‘top schools’ and for you to compete with them you need to go an extra mile, but always remember we have the best teachers in our local schools,” said Mfeka.

University Johannesburg (UJ) SASCO leader Karabo Mpantsa who is also from Orlando was there to motivate the learners echoed same sentiments of Mfeka when it comes to the students’ culture at universities saying. “It will make you dizzy, so don’t lose focus,” he said.
