DK Ladies puts 4 past Soweto Fabulous!

Considered a title contender, Soweto Fabulous has suffered a sobering 4 – 1 defeat at the hands of neighbours and league newcomers, Diepkloof Ladies.

Considered a title contender, Soweto Fabulous has suffered a sobering 4 – 1 defeat at the hands of neighbours and league newcomers, Diepkloof Ladies. The Gauteng Sasol Women’s League encounter was played at Eldorado Park Secondary School on Sunday afternoon.

The last time the clubs met, Soweto Fabulous walked away 3 – 0 winners and would have hoped for similar fortunes again this time around. Diepkloof Ladies, however, seemed to have learned from their mistakes and served Fabulous their first taste of defeat in the 2021 campaign.

Diepkloof Ladies opened the scoring through a Sithembiso Ncamane penalty in the first half. Not to be outdone, Soweto Fabulous responded just minutes later with a goal of their own from winger, Mpho Motsatse.

In the second half, neither side seemed content with a draw, and both went on all-out attacks. It was Diepkloof Ladies who were rewarded when Unathi Mjijwa put them in front early in the second half. As Soweto Fabulous sent numbers forward in search of a comeback, they were left exposed at the back and Unathi Mjiwa once again capitalised, finishing neatly to make it 3- 1 to the visitors. DK Ladies’ Tumi Mabojane put the final nail on the coffin with a close-range finish and the match ended 4 – 1.

Soweto Fabulous Captain, Thando Dlamini spoke to Soweto Urban after the game.

“I think our biggest mistake was playing into their (Diepkloof Ladies) game,” Dlamini said.

Titanic tussle: Diepkloof Ladies (maroon) overcame the odds to beat title contenders, Soweto Fabulous (pink) in the Gauteng Sasol Women’s League on Sunday.

“We did not play our normal game, and we looked nervous on the ball. They have younger players so they have speed on their side. We play better when we control the ball and we did not do that today. The game was a lesson for us and a wake-up call. We will go back to the drawing board and assess how we can improve. The season is not over and we know we can turn things around.”

Diepkloof Ladies defender, Busi Mjiako explained the significance of the fixture.

“Having lost last year, we wanted to show what we can do. Soweto Fabulous are older and have more experience but we came here to give it our all and showcase our talent. The message the coaches gave us was to play our football and relax. We are very happy to take the three points,” Mjiako said.

The win was the first of the season for the ladies from Diepkloof and they will be looking to continue their good form when they travel to Alexandra to take on Blue Birds Ladies Football Academy on Sunday. Meanwhile, Soweto Fabulous will have to lick their wounds get back to winning ways if they are to get their title charge back on track when they host Lusaka Ladies on the same day.
