The accused were arrested in Mapetla, Soweto on Saturday, April 10, 2021, and they have been charged with murder.

Sangweni was allegedly attacked and set alight by members of the community on March 26 at a house in Mapetla following accusations that she was a witch. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to burn injuries on April 5 at Baragwanath Hospital after she was rushed to on the day of the incident.

It is alleged that she was attacked for wearing a traditional healers’ attire.

The NPA is working closely with the police to guide the ongoing investigation into her death and the possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out at this stage.

The case was postponed to April 20, 2021, for the accused to secure legal representation from Legal Aid South Africa. On social media, Sangweni’s family members confirmed that she had been diagnosed with dementia.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the lack of education when it comes to mental health in the townships.
