Diepkloof fashionistas breaking the societal stereotypes of what ‘success’ is

They had a walk to celebrate Freedom of Expression through Art and fashion.

Fashion on its own is one way people practice freedom of expression. A group of fashionistas, Katlego Mothlane, Kgomotso Selahle, and Kagiso Ngangomlungu from Diepkloof came up with a great initiative, encouraging young people to ignore societal stereotypes and express themselves through art and fashion and that success is not only through becoming a lawyer, a doctor or an engineer but fashion designing or photography are also great careers that can potentially lead to success.

In 2019 they hosted an event called Diepkloof Social Market, which was aimed at boosting local businesses at the same time showcasing the talent that’s in fashion and art.

“Our main aim was to show consistency in our fashion and art craft as we involve different photographers and other creatives to come and showcase their arts and crafts. We have hosted 4 events so far and still trying to get potential sponsors on board,” said Kagiso Ngangomlungu, co-founder.

On human rights day, March 21 this year, they hosted a walk to create awareness around art and fashion, celebrating the right to freedom of expression.

” The walk served as part of the movement of inspiring the youth and aiming to change the community perceptive to not see the youth as a lost generation but people who have bigger dreams and that success is not by only becoming a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer,” Ngangomlungu said.

“Fashion is Freedom of Expression, fashion can build ones confidence and can also represent who you are or what kind of person you are without talking and most importantly, can be taken as a career, be it through photography, fashion designing, modeling, influencing or entrepreneurship, fashion can be a career,” Ngangomlungu added.

The walk was also to Raise awareness against different social issues the country is facing such as drug abuse, Gender-Based Violence as well as getting arts to be recognised as a career in our communities.
