Sasol Women’s League to kick off this weekend

“We cannot hide our excitement to see the girls back on the field" - Nozipho Mbatha.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that the 2021 Sasol Women’s League season will finally kick off this weekend.

With government restrictions relaxed in March, SAFA announced that teams would be allowed to return to the green, but only for training. Since then, teams have done their best to bolster fitness levels ahead of this week’s opening fixtures.

Nozipho Mbatha, Sasol’s Head of Brand and Sponsorships said Sasol was excited to get back underway.

“We cannot hide our excitement to see the girls back on the field, where they belong. Our role as Sasol is to help grow and develop women’s football in South Africa, but unfortunately, Covid-19 denied us, and the players, that chance,” said Mbatha.

The 2020 Sasol Women’s League season came to an abrupt halt in March 2020 after just three match days. This season, the teams will be hoping to claim their stake as winning the league would send a team into the Sasol League National Championships, where the provincial winners will clash. The winner of the championships will gain promotion to the coveted Safa National Women’s League.

Sowetan outfit, Diepkloof Ladies will kick off their campaign with an away trip to Balfour to take on Croesus Ladies at Northview High School this Saturday. Soweto Fabulous will take on Luso Africa at the Lenz Stadium in Lenesia on Sunday. The two rivals will clash the following weekend on April 18, at the Moletsane Sports Complex in Soweto.

Elsewhere, Wits University will host Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports School on Saturday at Sturrock Park in Johannesburg.

The kick-off time for all mentioned matches is 13:00.
