The ‘we want fibre’ campaign moves through Eldorado Park

The project is currently still in phase 1 with survey collecting.

The ‘we want fibre’ campaign started last year in Eldorado Park with Vumatel. The group of people from Eldorado Park are going door-to-door in the community to gather information on whether you use the internet, what connectivity do you have and what social media are you using.

According to the project manager; Wesley van Wyk, the surveys that they have collected so far indicated that Facebook and Whatsapp are the most used social media platforms in Eldorado Park including Bushkoppies. The team has not yet confirmed if the project will move out to Klipspruit West too.

Currently, the project is still in phase 1 with the survey collections. “Our phase 1 comprises of fourteen employees from Eldorado Park who gather the information. The second phase and the third phase will come once 30% of the households agree to fibre. With phase two we are looking at employing about forty to one hundred residents to start with the trenches and people to put up the poles,” explained van Wyk.

The survey also indicated that the majority of residents use their phones to a hotspot in Eldorado Park and the ones that have Wi-Fi are paying high fees.

Van Wyk defines the term ‘fibre’; “Fibre is a replacement of the old copper internet that we use to use, it uses glass as the cable so the cables can’t be stolen because its infrastructure that is useless to vandals. Fibre is also much faster than any connections that we previously had. It is stable, it is not affected by the weather, you will still have connectivity and fibre is cheaper.”

If you are unemployed and interested in possible employment through the project, you can leave your information at the council office (in the same yard as the Don Mateman Hall). Employment will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The team is hopeful that they will get to phase 2 and 3 of the project to bring fibre to the community.
