At the beginning of winter of 2018, the Bessit family home burnt in Eldorado Park, extension 4, and almost three years later the house is almost completely repaired.

Absolom Bessit (99) and Rosy Bessit (86) who have been married for forty-five years are proud of their son Wenzel Bessit better known as Wayne for his assistance in fixing their family home.
Wayne explained that it was a heater in his parents’ room that started the fire. “The heater blew in my parents’ room. The night while I was asleep, my mother woke me up to tell me that their bed was burning. My father and I thought that we put out the fire.”

The morning, I left the house and when I turned around while I was in extension 2, I saw a lot of smoke so I decided to go back home. As I got into our street, there were a lot of people in the street, my parents were sitting across the road and people tried to put out the fire. We had a lot of wooden furniture so everything burnt fast. The fire brigades took about an hour to arrive so we tried to use one hosepipe in the meantime,” he said.

Mr. and Mrs. Bessit had to go live in Diepkloof at her daughter’s house (Minela Watkins) while Wayne moved from friends to his daughter but soon returned to the burnt house and lived there alone.

Christian Family Church in Kempton Park assisted the family with fixing half of the roof and Crystal Ministries helped by donating furniture to the family.
At the end of last, Wayne took it upon himself to fix the house for his parents because they ended up moving back and are currently living in a backroom in the yard while the house is being repaired.

“I decided to fix it for my parents because whenever they would walk in the driveway, they would stare at the burnt house. They are very old and were one of the first residents here in Eldorado Park. Everything that belonged to them went up in flames,” explained Wayne.

In December the family had a celebration at the house for their parents.

“I would like to thank everyone who assisted us on that day of the fire, they were very helpful and I would like to thank the churches for their assistance. I would like to thank all the guys from Ankile Construction who are helping me fix the house as well as everyone in the community who prayed for us,” concluded Wayne.

Mr. and Mrs. Bessit are soon to be moving back into their house and are relieved that after almost three years they can relax in a place they call home.
