President Ramaphosa Honoured Winnie Mandela in Meadowlands

"She will not be silenced, she will not be hidden in the background of history. We are here to say we will always remember uMama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela" – Ramaphosa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid respects to late struggle icon, Winne Madikizela-Mandela. The President attended a Good Friday church service at the Methodist Church in Meadowlands, Zone 7 on the anniversary of her passing. In addition to Good Friday, the service was also held in memory of Winnie Madikizela Mandela, who was a member of the church. Madikizela played an instrumental role in the liberation of South Africa and was the leader of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) between 1993 and 2003.

“Mama Winnie was an iconic leader, many of us are proud to associate ourselves with her,” Ramaphosa said at the service.

“She will not be silenced, she will not be hidden in the background of history. We are here to say we will always remember uMama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.”

The President also thanked the Methodist Church for adhering to covid regulations and keeping the numbers of attendees limited.

Earlier on the day, Ramaphosa attended and delivered the keynote address at a wreath-laying ceremony held at the Fourways Memorial Park, in honour of the late anti-apartheid activist. During his address, Ramaphosa called for unity in the African National Congress (ANC).
“We are also going through a very challenging time as the African National Congress,” he said.

“And she (Winnie) would have been at the forefront, arguing that we should continue the project of uniting the African National Congress. She would have been saying that is the task we need to be seized with on an ongoing basis, finding ways at a practical level to continue to unite this great glorious movement,” he said.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s granddaughter, Zamaswazi Mandela-Dlamini said her grandmother was the glue that kept the family together and vowed to keep Winnie’s legacy alive.

“I have made it my mission to ensure that not only does her name and her legacy lives beyond just today but every single day. I dedicate my life to ensure that people remember her and people know who she is, what she did, and what she gave,” Zamaswazi said.
