Matric learner at Sekanontoane Secondary suffers sudden death

MEC Lesufi is saddened by the sudden death of this learner who was set to complete her matric this year.

The Gauteng Education MEC, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi, is saddened by the death of an 18-year-old Grade 12 girl learner from Sekanontoane Secondary School in Soweto who passed away on Wednesday, 30 March 2021.

According to information at our disposal, this unfortunate incident occurred at around 07:45 am. The learner allegedly arrived at school and attended her class that morning, but she suddenly ran out of the class rushing to the water tap while struggling to breathe.

Subsequently, the school principal contacted the learner’s parents and an ambulance to assist. However, the principal resorted to urgently transport the learner to a nearby clinic in Chiawelo.

The clinic staff tried to assist the learner, but they realised that she needed further medical treatment. The learner was then transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for further medical attention. Unfortunately, the learner passed away in the afternoon.

Our Psycho-Social unit has been deployed to visit the school today, 01 April 2021, to provide the necessary counselling to all affected by this sad incident.
