The Meraki Project officially launched in Eldorado Park

The event has a full programme to unveil a multipurpose sports court, community vegetable garden, and an education center, which is all in the back yard of Eldorado Park Secondary School.

MUFG Bank, in collaboration with Eldorado Park Secondary School, had an official launch for the Meraki Project on March 27. The event has a full programme to unveil a multipurpose sports court, community vegetable garden, and an education center, which is all in the back yard of Eldorado Park Secondary School.

Other stakeholders of the Meraki Project are; Environmentorz, African Way, Rise Against Hunger, The House Group, Trinity Garden Products, Dita Lokflor, Sakata Seed Southern Africa, and Alchemy Sport and Recreation.

Former principal of Eldorado Park Secondary, Marlon Louw said: “We have a very difficult community with high unemployment, high crime rates and that is why we are here today at this facility. Eight years ago, we decided to make a change in the community and moved forward. These facilities will allow learners to dream again and it will also draw in our community members.”

Louw thanked everyone who is involved in the project including local businesses such as Build it in Eldorado Park, a butcher who assisted at the beginning of the project, and the School Governing Body (SGB) at the Eldorado Park Secondary School.

The launch was scheduled for last year, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the plans had to be delayed.

Zayd Fredericks who is the chairman of Midas Sports Development shared: “Eight years ago, there was nothing here but a veld, and we decided to cultivate it and make something out of it. Our facility is based on the philosophy that we will grow with the people around us. We need to train and develop the minds of the youth. I am thankful because I spent over eight years of my life-changing this area where bodies were found, people were raped and murdered here. This facility is light in our community.”

The multipurpose sports facility is to keep the youth active and encourages a clean lifestyle while the education centre keeps them focused on academics as well and the community vegetable garden is to feed those who are in need. After the launch, attendees had the opportunity of buying vegetables straight from the garden.
