Kliptown SAPS went beyond the call of duty to help learners this past Thursday. The members of the station, with the Community Police Forum (CPF), dug into their pockets and donated towards buying school shoes and uniforms.
The first stop of the day was Firethorn Primary School in Klipspruit West where school shoes and school uniforms were donated. This was followed by a trip to Mdelwa Hlongwane Primary school in Pimville where more pairs of shoes were donated. On the day, a total of 30 pairs of school shoes and 6 school uniforms were handed over to learners from the two schools.
The spokesperson for Kliptown SAPS, Captain Hitler Ngwenya said it was important for the SAPS to show the community that police were not blind to their struggles.
“We are pleased to have partnered with schools and teachers on this, who helped us identify learners we could help. We want the community to know that above-being police, we are parents. We want to show that we are aware of the struggles they face and that we try and support them wherever we can. I have to thank the SAPS members who decided to take from their own pockets and help learners.”
The donation was part of Kliptown SAPS’s community outreach programme that has seen the station donate blankets to residents in squatter camps, as well as donate food to needy members of the public.
Ngwenya extended an invitation to parties interested in helping out.
“The school shoes and uniforms’ donation initiative is something we would like to continue doing, and hopefully reach out to more schools and more children. Any individual or organisation that wants to get on board and be part of this initiative is more than welcome to get in touch with us,” said Ngwenya.
