Matriculants from Forte Secondary School in Dobsonville Soweto had a challenging 2020 academic year, but they stood up to the challenge and managed to be titled the best performing township school in Gauteng with a 98% pass rate.

The school’s joint effort with an improvement programme called the Joe Public United’s School, One School at a Time, had the school’s principal Leonard Mudavhi at a loss for words, he said, “We are amazed as a school at how impactful this partnership has been. This year we have a total of 471 matriculants and we are looking forward to many more fruitful years.”

Mudavhi explained that they had to make sure that education continued for their 2020 matriculants regardless of the situation.

He said, “We were faced with an intense challenge when more than 8 of our educators were affected by the virus, we decided to introduce a rotation system which ensured that a limited number of learners and educators would be at the school’s premises at a time. Always adhering to the COVID-19 regulations.”

The principal from the school explained that the learners also had an opportunity to interact with teachers on a one-on-one basis, so all of their academic concerns were each given enough attention.

The school also took it up a notch last year by incorporating leadership coaching with Saturday classes which motivated and empowered the learners significantly.

The result is evident.
