Dignity packs donated at several schools in Orlando, Soweto

Gauteng Provincial Legislature gives back.

As part of its school readiness visits, Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Deputy speaker, Nomvuyo Mhlakaza visited some schools in Orlando, these include, Thembalihle Primary School, Ditawana Primary School, Ditau Primar School. Zifunele Junior Secondary School, Job Rathebe Secondary School, and donated dignity packs to some of the learners.

Soweto Urban interviewed Thembalihle Primary School’s principal, Happy Zungu and he said that he appreciates the effort, especially during this pandemic where most parents and guardians lost their jobs and don’t have any source of income and thus, they can’t afford basic hygiene products.

“Our school caters for learners who are from our nearby townships, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature approached our school and requested us to provide them with a list of learners who can benefit from their dignity packs donation initiative and they indeed delivered, this showed us that they are not just ‘the government’ but they are working together with communities to help the needy. To us, as a school, this means a lot and we appreciate them for the role they are playing in the community,” Zungu said.

“Our school has a lot of learners who can benefit from the initiatives such as this one as the pandemic has taken its toll on people’s finances and thus, most parents are struggling to provide for the basic needs,” he added.

The school has a School-Based Support (SBS) team which is responsible for identifying learners who might need assistance and according to Zungu, it is because of the team that they can assist most of their learners by all means possible.
