Tshepo Hlwempu bagged 7 distinctions with 99% in Mathematics
The matric learner obtained 80% in Setswana, 82% in English,80% in Life orientation, 85% in history, 90% in Life Sciences, and 98% in Physical Sciences.
A product of Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology, Tshepo Hlwempu bagged seven distinctions with 99% in Maths and is a top achiever at his local school, Mokgome Secondary School.
The matric learner obtained 80% in Setswana, 82% in English,80% in Life orientation, 85% in history, 90% in Life Sciences, and 98% in Physical Sciences.
The 18-year-old was raised by his grandmother since his parents passed away when he was young. “My matric year was such a wonderful journey. I received support from my family, teachers, friends, and classmates,” said Hlwempu.

“I was under the most prestigious programme called Kutlwanong pro-Maths Centre which gave me assistance in mathematics and physical sciences and most importantly it taught me discipline.”
Tshepo Hlwempu is looking forward to studying medicine at Wits. The centre is an award-winning maths programme that seeks to support the South African education system to produce students that are competent in maths and science, the two subjects deemed most vital for the growth of the country’s economy.
The centre wants to help produce today’s accountants, scientists, engineers, and even the astronauts of tomorrow. “It challenged me to spend sleepless nights studying and working hard. I wouldn’t say I was good enough with mathematics and physical sciences from grade 10 but Kutlwanong made it possible for me to achieve 99% in mathematics and 98% in physical sciences,” He said.
