Nonhlanhla Mazaleni(46) allegedly assaulted by three police officers

Mazelani alleges that she was assaulted by three police officers when she tried to get the state to take an eight-month-old child to a place of safety.

A professional counselor who is also a community health care worker, Nonhlanhla Mazaleni(46) from was thoroughly punched and kicked, allegedly by police officers, on January 15 at Nthabiseng Clinic at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

Mazelani told the media that she was allegedly assaulted by three police officers when she tried to get the state to take an eight-month-old child to a place of safety.

“There is an incident that took place on that Friday whereby the safety of the eight-month-old girl was compromised, which led to the mother of the child being placed behind holding cells and a case of child neglection was opened against her, however, the mother of the child pleaded with me that I help her in the process of placing the child in the place of safety until she is fit enough to be a mother and able to take care of the child.” Said Mazelani.

Things however took a sour turn when the person who was only trying to offer a helping hand became a victim of police brutality.

“After realising that it was getting late and had done my part in helping the child, I left the child with some police officers by placing the child on one of the officer’s lap through the window since they were refusing to take the child, I was then accused of neglecting the child who is not even my own, I then tried to leave the hospital premises and this is when I started receiving punches from three police officers, the pain became unbearable and I passed out.” Explained Mazelani.

Mazelani was later taken to the hospital for treatment of the bruises caused by the beating and it was then realised that her ankle had twisted. She was then advised to open a case against the police officers, which she did. Our Reporter contacted Diepkloof police station for comment and it was said that the matter is with IPID.

When contacting Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Spokesperson Ndileka Cola, she said that IPID is still investigating the matter.
