Coach Nathan Davies keeping Strokes FC on top of the game

Davies has been coaching Strokes FC since they started about ten years ago and he is also a coach at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (German School) in Parktown for the last five years.

“Thankfully for us at Strokes FC, we had the resources to continue training since level 3 started. We have been training in the morning and the afternoon. It has been a challenge since we have to adhere to all the Covid-19 protocols such as sanitising, checking our player’s temperatures, maintaining social distance and each player has to wear a mask. It’s quite challenging but we had to make it work,” explained head coach for Strokes Football Club (FC) Nathan Davies better known ‘Mourinho’.

The coach further explained that even during these tough times, professional coaches and players have the responsibility to find the means to keep fit.

Strokes FC was invited to play in a tournament in Chiawelo at the end of last year and made it to the quarter-finals when president Cyril Ramaphosa announced stricter measures for level 3. The coach indicated that the tournament is said to continue on February 20.

Davies is also a former Orlando Pirates assisting coach. Since the team is a competitive one the lockdown disadvantaged players because they win tournaments and receive cash prizes which are split between players. “Most of the players from our community are dependent on the money that we win at tournaments so last year we didn’t even play a tournament finish,” said Davies.

Strokes FC has won two Steven Pienaar tournaments so far and is also former champions in the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge.

“We would like to thank the community for their support throughout the years. People know that when we arrive, we come with a large group of supporters. Our supporters are our twelfth man and when Strokes is playing people would always say ‘Hier kom die mense’. We would also like to thank Allister Moffot who owns BuildIt in Eldorado Park, David Taaibos, and our club chairman Shawn ‘Graf’ Govender for all the support,” concluded Davies.
