Celebrating International Women and Girls in Science.

In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, we took a look at Itumeleng Mogatusi-Sekgota, a Sustainability, integration Specialist.

She was voted as the 1st runner up in the 2020 United Nation (UN) Global Compact, Sustainable Development Goals Pioneer Competition.

She was also recognised for leading sustainable innovation and promoting collaboration that creates better livelihoods for host communities.

Participating in the Brightest Young Mind Africa Programme back in 2017 sparked her interest in sustainability.

While working as a Mine Dewatering Hydrogeologist, part of Anglo America’s Flagship Graduate Programme, her work as a Project’s Hydrogeologist gave her vast work experience in Mine dewatering, slope depressurization, and mine water management.
Hydrogeology gave her the chance to work in different commodities, travel the country, and work abroad.

Mogatusi-Sekgota said, “I spent like 2 years working in the Andes Mountain Range in Chile, Los Bronces Mine. This is where I learned how to speak Spanish.”

She further said that even though she enjoyed being one of the few females in a male-dominated field and being challenged by complex groundwater issues she had to be faced within the mining operations, she said, “My passion has been to be a Scientist who solves complex issues that contribute to improving society. Contributing to society way beyond the mine fence.”

When she finally returned to SA, she became the SDG 6 Ambassador which states, “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”

She has since joined the Anglo America’s Group Sustainability Integration Team as a Sustainability Integration Specialist.

Her role is focused on supporting local and international mining sites in the planning and implementation of the Sustainable Mine Plan.

The plan seeks to position Anglo American as a leader in sustainability and sets long-term (10+ years) ambitious targets across a range of sustainability issues including water.
Whenever she is not working, Itumeleng Mogatusi Sekgota enjoys traveling, hiking, public speaking at Toastmasters, Improve, and lecturing.

For young girls and women who would like to find themselves making an impact like she is in her field, she said, “Believe in yourself and your abilities. Love learning and constantly ask for feedback on your performance.”
