The rape and murder accused of Phuti Ramara’s untimely death made a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on 9 February and asked to abandon his application for Legal Aid Bail.

The matter was postponed to 25 March, however, the deceased young girl’s family and everyone supporting them in getting justice for her murder saw the accused’ prior actions in applying for bail as offensive and arrogant, but the accused quickly had a change of heart.

To add to the Ramara family frustrations, the two other girls who had gone home to fetch Phuti from home on the night of her death, were nowhere to be found. Sibongile Ramara said, “We have been heartbroken and saddened as a family, and it amazes us that the girls who fetched our Phuti from home on the night of her passing away are now standing on the fence. They must appear in court and answer questions about what happened that night.”

Cllr Elliot Khumalo accompanied the family and expressed disappointment over the fact that the accused was not showing any signs of remorse before abandoning his bail application, he said, “We were not happy with the accused and his arrogantly asking for bail, knowing very well his evil deed. We are relieved to hear him abandoning his bail application.”

Khumalo, who went to the field in Protea Glen where the lifeless body of Phuti Ramara was found on the morning she was found said, “The accused must tell the truth, he must also reveal his accomplice because from being at the scene where Phuti was found, we saw car trails and footsteps from more than one man with trails coming from the car to the spot where Phuti’ body was found.”

81-year-old Agnes Ramara, Phuti’ grandmother said, “We just need to see justice take its course. He already murdered my granddaughter, I have buried her, she can’t be brought back.”

The case was postponed to 25 March.

The accused was nabbed late December last year, attempting to flee to Lesotho.

People desiring to see GBV and Femicide diminish in SA and justice prevail can join in the support of Phuti Ramara’ family in their fight for justice in the accused’ next appearance.
