Manny Yack’s open letter to his father

Manny Yack was brought up by a single mother thus leaving him with many questions about him growing up with an absent father.

RNB and Hip-Hop artist Zakrim Phiri better known by his stage name “Manny Yack” turns his pain into an art piece titled ‘Khumbula’.

Manny Yack shared that he grew up listening to Reggae, RNB, and Pop music which inspired him to be the artist he is today. “In the early 2000s my uncle bought 50 Cent’s ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’ cassette and I was hooked since. I started writing my raps at 10-years-old and started recording at 16,” he explained.

The artist who is now signed to the Ambitiouz Entertainment record label was asked how his musical journey has been so far, he said: “The journey has been very exciting so far. I’m blessed to be working with the best in the industry who are helping me shape my career.”

He explained that while growing up, most of his friends shared the same experience of absent fathers, which is a reality for about 60% of South African children. While other people consider fatherless children as having a sense of loss and confusion, Manny Yack feels different as his experience prepared him to be the father he always wished to have.

Those questions and hurt about having an absent father later led him to writing an open letter to his father and that letter is now his debut single titled ‘Khumbula’. The single was released on January 15 and the artist reached for his raw feelings and pain as he questions why his father had to leave them. Manny expresses all the sadness, hardships, anger, and trauma that he experienced in his father’s absence.

The 24-year-old who hails from Ladysmith reminds his father that he remembers all the drama and conflict that would take place whenever his father was around.

“I am extremely excited about my debut single. I want the message to heal those with unhealed wounds, change the hearts of fathers who abandoned their children and hopefully mend broken families. “After being featured by Miss Pru, Kid Tini, and Dr. MaVibes, I feel it is now time for people to know who I am. The message on Khumbula is one many people will relate to,” he said.

Manny Yack feels it is important that he shares his story to address the issue of absent fathers to motivate the next generation of men to be responsible. He swore to change the narrative and not have his daughter experience the same fate as he did.

The artist believes that it is his versatility that sets me apart from other artists. Manny Yack concluded the interview by sharing a message to the youth: “To the youth, no matter where you come from, it is possible to achieve your dreams. Do whatever it takes. I had to work at petrol stations and call centres to fund my career.” Fans can expect more music from the artist this year. You can follow Manny Yack on social media: @Yackmanny
