Matric marking continues despite over 800 markers pulling out

A roll call on Tuesday revealed that as many as 800 had showed up for the second day

The Gauteng Department of Education has assured parents and learners alike that the marking of 2020 matric scripts has continued uninterrupted following the shocking news that just over 800 markers had pulled out last week.

According to the Department, all markers were present on Monday the 4th, but a roll call on Tuesday revealed that as many as 800 had not shown up for the second day. Reasons for pulling out included fears of contracting the virus and family issues, amongst others. Despite the inconvenience though, the department’s Spokesperson, Steve Mabona said the markers were replaced and earnest marking began as scheduled on Wednesday.

“We have replaced all of them, and continue with marking as per schedule,” Mabona confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

The department also sent a message of thanks to the markers who continued, and reaffirmed that all Covid protocols and safety standards had been met to ensure the safety of markers.

“Indeed, we are indebted to all markers who continue to adhere to Covid-19 protocols. The department undertakes to protect markers from exposure to the pandemic,” Mabona added.

The marking of scripts is set to be completed by 22 January, while the 2020 Grade 12 results are scheduled to be released on 22 February 2021. Patricia Mothuli, a parent of a 2020 grade 12 learner, said she was glad the situation had been handled quickly.

“I heard on the radio and got worried,” she said.

“I am just happy it was resolved quickly and the department was able to replace them. I think the Grade 12’s have had enough disruptions.”

On the outcome of the results, Mothuli advised that parents should not put too much pressure on kids.

“We (parents) sometimes put too much pressure on our kids. We hope for the best, but things may not always go that. As parents, we should ease the burden on their (learners) shoulders and simply offer support when needed,” she said.
