The Independent Private School Spark in Protea Glen, Soweto is getting rid of the trend of poor Literacy and Maths outcomes in South African schools.

The Grade 3 pupils from the school scored up to 40% higher than other schools in recent benchmark assessments. Spark learners achieved an average of 87% for Literacy and 67% for Maths in the pilot of the JumpTrakTM_Benchmark last year November.

The Department of Basic Education presented the latest findings of the trends in global Maths and Science study 2019 (TIMSS), showing how SA students compare to other students.

compare to the rest of the world. The study indicated how less than 4 in 10 (37%) South African learners have acquired basic mathematical knowledge, meaning; almost two-thirds of learners cannot apply knowledge in simple or complex solutions and to communicate understandings.

While the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) showed that 8 out of 10 South African Grade 4 learner cannot read for meaning; Spark Soweto Principa Gundo Mmbi said, “The results provided an insight into how the school’s learners were faring amongst their South African peers in other private schools.”
