Due to its rich history, the street has become a major tourist attraction not only in Soweto but for the whole world as well.

If you are not sure what to get up to during the festive season in Soweto, look no further than the iconic Vilakazi Street located in Orlando West, Soweto.

Due to its rich history, the street has become a major tourist attraction not only in Soweto but for the whole world as well.

You may not know that the street is home to not one, but two Nobel Peace Prize winners, namely, Former South African President, Nelson Mandela, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu were residents of the Sowetan street. This is the only street in the world that can boast a statement.

What was once the battleground against the Apartheid regime, is now a lively thriving street. Things you can see along Vilakazi streets range from traditional performances by groups who regularly display their work for tourists along the street, to a truly Sowetan feel at the Sakhumzi Restaurant, as well as the many other restaurants. Along the streets, you will also be able to purchase South African traditional attire of your choice.

If however, you find yourself feeling a bit more historically curious, you can drive up the streets where you can find the Hector Pietersen Memorial, the late Pieterson was only 12 Years Old when he was fatally shot during the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising. His death would fuel the fight against apartheid and play a pivotal role in the freedom South Africa enjoys today.

There is this and much more to learn on Orlando’s Vilakazi Street.
