10 Eldos learners to recieve bursaries from Afri-CAN EduFund

The Afri-CAN EduFund was founded during the pandemic in 2020 by Reagan Mitchell in honour of his late friend Reginald James.

10 learners in Eldorado Park who are going to Grade 8 this year will be receiving their bursaries from Afri-CAN EduFund for their 2021 academic year.

The Afri-CAN EduFund was founded during the pandemic in 2020 by Reagan Mitchell in honour of his late friend Reginald James.

They had always intended to start an education fund for the benefit of children from their hometown Eldorado Park.

Eldorado Park is a township in the south of Johannesburg, South Africa, notoriously known for crime, alcoholism, and drugs. However, that narrative is slowly changing.

According to the founder, Reagan Mitchell, “My desire to start this bursary fund was also fueled by my personal experience of being a grade 9 school dropout, getting involved with all sorts of unsavoury activities, only completing my matric much later on in my life.

“I’ve since gone on to acquire qualifications in wealth management, finance, and innovation, and three years ago I started a financial services company called WealthyMe. I am a living testimony of how education can significantly change the trajectory of your life.”

The Selection Process

The fund was launched in November 2020 calling from applications. From the numerous applications received, ten students were selected on several criteria including economic status, academic results, and motivation submitted. An interview was then conducted with each candidate and their caregiver after which the bursary was awarded.

Tracking Methodology

We will track our first intake of students from grade 8 to grade 12 to study their development and to better understand their evolving needs. Using this methodology, we will dynamically intervene and provide on-demand support to grow our learners holistically. This approach will help us improve our support packages for future intakes.
