House burns down on new year in Meadowlands

An inquiry for arson was opened at Meadowlands SAPS after a house almost burnt into embers, and no injuries were reported.

In a statement released by the Spokesperson for Meadowlands SAPS, Octavia Thebe, it was reported that while people were celebrating the new year, on 1 January, Sibusiso Mathibela from the household was fetched by his niece from his backroom, who said the house was on fire.

Mathibela reported that when he found the house in flames, he tried to extinguish the fire with buckets of water, but the smoke only arose more.



The statement further explained that the neighbors did try to help extinguish the fire, but it got more fierce as at caught on more items and the flames grew.

The rooftop collapsed, the statement said that the damage caused by the fire is approximately R450 000 and the cause of the fire is not known.

Happy Ntanzi has been helping the family pick up the pieces, he said, “We appeal for any assistance in rebuilding the home for the kids.”
