A night out? Read a book instead!

As South Africa is still on Lockdown, it may be safer to stay indoors than go out with friends. So instead of going out, risking your health, rather snuggle up with a book.

As South Africa is still on Lockdown, it may be safer to stay indoors than go out with friends. So instead of going out, risking your health, rather snuggle up with a book. Thankfully South Africa has no shortage of reading material. There are some outstanding books you can read which will undoubtedly improve your reading ability (and well, in a way, your health.)

An interesting book to try out is Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime. The radio host-turned stand-up comedian-turned TV host reveals himself in a light like no other in this book.

The book is one of the best selling books around the world, with certain schools in Canada, going as far as adding it to the school’s learning curriculum.

The book is available in audio which gives a sense of how Trevor felt at each specific moment as he narrates his childhood. From being the awkwardly tall misfit at school to his Sepedi speaking Matric Dance date to his unorthodox relationship with his father, Trevor tells all.

The book also carries an educational element to it, at various points in the book, Trevor analyses social constructs, heavily criticizes the Apartheid regime, and questions the impact on segregation in South Africa.

Despite what sounds like a dramatic autobiography, Noah, as he always has, manages to find humor in all the ups and downs, and will have you laughing uncontrollably at his well, let’s say, mostly unfortunate-yet-entertaining encounters, as he navigates life as a mixed-raced child at a time where race-mixing was illegal.

Trevor Noah’s Born A Crime is just one of many truly South African books you will love. Other hard-hitters include Basetsane Khumalo’s Journey of Hope, Jackie Phamotse’s Bare, and Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s Gangster State.
