Distributing some love and joy through Christmas cards

Sharing a Christmas opinion piece.

This may sound very old school, but one of my favourite memories of the Christmas holidays was handing out Christmas cards to all the neighbours in the street.

My late grandmother used to buy cute little cards and then write them out to the neighbours in the street.

My sister and I who were no older than 13-years-old used to run up the street and hand out the Christmas cards to the neighbours, sometimes we would use our bicycles and cycle up the road while my granny would watch us place the cards into the post-boxes.

It was so much fun; we were very shy little girls so when neighbours came out to get the cards, we didn’t really know what to say but their big smiles and kind words always brought joy to us.

My granny passed away and I can’t remember if we handed out cards for years after that.

As the years went by the Christmas cards started fading away as neighbours didn’t continue with the old tradition.

When I got to my last few years of high school, I started making my own Christmas cards for the family and neighbours.

Every year I would have a different theme for the cards and I was very proud of them.

I had more fun creating them, I would cut and paste, use string, wool, leaves, white paper, cardboard, colour paper, I basically used any materials I could get to get creative; it was really a lot of fun and once I feel that they were done, I would then hand them out.

Nowadays, no one makes or writes out Christmas cards, neighbours are not as kind to each other as they were back in the day, maybe it was our granny’s who kept this alive and we just didn’t keep the tradition, or maybe we can blame it on the digital age, all I know is that it was a lot of fun preparing for Christmas and spreading the love and joy.
