Eldos, Sammas residents demand change

Residents from a small area called the ‘Sammas’ in Eldorado Park, extension 2 threaten to go on a mass action campaign after years of their demands falling on deaf ears.

Residents from a small area called the ‘Sammas’ in Eldorado Park, extension 2 threaten to go on a mass action campaign after years of their demands falling on deaf ears. Political activist and community leader, Donne Reece shared that they as residents had enough of empty promises.

The resident explained that part of their demands is housing because there is a lot of overcrowding in houses. There are no play facilities for children so you would find the little ones playing in the streets while cars are using the road.

There are many blocked drains which cause floods every time there are heavy rains which cause damage to furniture, floor tiles and some electrical appliances of residents.

“We have an issue with our electrical supply, whenever there’s heavy rains or winds the electrical supply gets cut off. We would like for the electrical cables to be replaced, there was a high mast floodlight that was put in about 25 years ago, it worked maybe twice, and never again, we would like for them to fix that, we live in a high crime area so we demand that light be switched on.

“This area is known for drug trafficking, hijackings, murders, rape, and lots of other crimes and unfortunately our residents are victims to these crimes. Another demand that we have is for them to subdivide our systems at home because everything is connected here by us.” said Reece.

There’s an area at the back of the houses that was tarred, the community would like that area to be resurfaced with concrete so that the children of the community can have a play facility. According to residents, the tarred area is not used for anything because if cars have to go through here, their tires get punctured because of the bad potholes.

Another resident explained that they have to find other parking for their cars, some have to pay other residents to use their yards for parking because they cannot enter their street.

“Our houses here have been condemned as early as 1974 but they are still here, these houses are not inhabitable for humans to live in because there is still asbestos in these houses,” said Reece.
Many residents have title deeds but feel as though they were given dilapidated buildings.

“As a civic leader, we are going to fight the system, our politicians have failed us, they heading into local government elections and after the elections, they going to continue to fail us. We have been handing memorandums to councils, MMC’s and still nothing has been done for us. If our plights are not seen to we will take action,” concluded Reece.
