The Soweto Football Association (SFA) has announced that the 2020 edition of the annual Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge has been effectively canceled.
In sad news for football lovers, The Soweto Football Association (SFA) has announced that the 2020 edition of the annual Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge has been effectively canceled.
According to a communiqué circulated to clubs, the decision was made after lengthy discussions between the SFA and the tournament sponsor, Discovery. The decision was made in consideration of government regulations that limit large gatherings as part of South Africa’s response strategy against the coronavirus outbreak.
“The SFA and Discovery feel that it is important to be as cautious as possible, especially considering the rising infection rate in the country and to ensure that you as players, managers and technical staff are kept as safe as possible during this time,” the communiqué reads.

South Africa had gone into one of the world’s strictest and longest lockdowns to try and stop the spread of the Covid – 19, although regulations have been relaxed from level 5 to 1, there has been an alarming rise in infections. Football lover, Thabiso Makoko said he was disappointed because he had been looking forward t see talent display.
“It’s the best tournament to watch during the holidays, we’ve been watching every year and so it’s strange that we will not be seeing it this year. I love the tournament t because it shows the best of local football with style and flair. I hope a vaccine is found soon and gets to Soweth Africa as soon as possible because we are losing too many important tournaments now,” he said.
Although this year’s edition is canceled, hopes for a 20211 edition are high.
“We hope that things will return to normal next year and that we can welcome you all back onto the field once again to celebrate the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge,” said SFA General Secretary, Peter Thuntsane.
