Sister’s Keeper set to be officially launched on December, 5

Sister's Keeper gave people a platform to give their accounts of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) they had endured or witnessed.

When South Africa went into hard lockdown in March, for many, that meant being safe from the virus, but for many women and children, that meant being locked inside with their abusers. This month, as South Africa observes 16 days of No Violence against Women and Children, the Sister’s Keeper Movement is set to be officially launched.

What started as a Facebook page, soon came to life. This was after the page, Sister’s Keeper, that gave people a platform to give their accounts of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) they had endured or witnessed recorded more responses than ever predicted.

The page was opened as a response to the scourge of Gender-Based Violence that plagues the country, the murders of Tshegofatso Pule, Sanelisiwe Mfaba, and others, paint a gruesome picture of the reality and the depth of the GBV crisis in South Africa. This is was what compelled Olebogeng Moemisi, the Chairperson of Sister’s Keeper to start the movement that would be a haven for GBV victims and those affected.

Today, Sister’s Keeper has grown beyond Soweto and to other provinces. On the 5th of December, Sister’s Keeper is set to be officially launched. The launch will be held at Silverpipe Park in Meadowlands Zone 1 and will kick off at 9 am with a football tournament dedicated to Tshegofatso Pule and other victims of GBV before stakeholders address the community on issues surrounding GBV.

On the 12th of December, Sister’s Keeper is once more set to host a family day event that will begin with a morning of aerobics and end with a meaningful cycling experience where a route is planned to visit some victims’ families to pay respects. Sister’s Keeper has confirmed that Bicycles will be rented out to those who are interested in partaking.
