Supporting charities in the fight against hunger

The new DHL campaign has thrown its weight behind two food charities, FoodFoward SA and Mother Soup.

Global logistics powerhouse DHL added more support to two charities in a bid to provide one million meals by December.

The new DHL campaign has thrown its weight behind two food charities – FoodFoward SA and Mother Soup – with the overall aim to give a mind-boggling one million by December to communities throughout the country.

Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering edible surplus food from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers, for redistribution to registered beneficiary organizations that serve the poor. FoodForward SA calls this cost-effective model Foodbanking.

FoodFooward SA Managing Director, Andy Du Plesis said the charity organization was grateful to receive support from DHL.

“Their eagerness to learn about the organization and show support was heartwarming. We are always thankful for monetary support, but there is something really special about people offering up their time. We look forward to the next couple of weeks of working alongside DHL and its employees as we chip away at the 1 000 000 meals total,” he said.

The second stop for DHL would be Mother Soup, a charity formed during South Africa’s lockdown and mainly focuses on the provide nutritious soup to the underprivileged communities in Capetown and those who struggle as a result of the Covid pandemic.

Zama Sithole, a DHL employee and FoodForward SA volunteer for the day said the experience was amazing.
This is an amazing initiative,” she said. “DHL means it when we say ‘we connect people, improving their lives’. This is another beautiful example. I enjoyed the tour that the Manager gave us. It was great to learn about the history of FoodForward SA, where it all started, and the impact that they have daily in our communities. I also enjoyed packing the food pallet. It’s a good feeling knowing that I assisted in bringing a smile to someone’s face.”

While Trishan Pillay, another DHL employee encouraged the spirit of making a difference to those less fortunate.

“We need to have more campaigns like this one. It means a lot to be able to give back to our community and I am grateful to have the opportunity to do so with such a great company that I work for. I really enjoyed the chats and laughs that were shared with my DHL Team. It felt really good to make a difference together.”

DHL employees will continue to volunteer for both FoodForward SA and Mother Soup around Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban to continue the push to prove one million meals.
