Soweto Festival Expo to give Sowetans a platform to learn and showcase their talents

"The Soweto Festival Expo is meant to uplift, promote and celebrate the people of Soweto" - Lennox Zama Qambi.

The Soweto Festival Expo is back and, and is tradition, will feature a series of entertaining, educational, and community inclusive events as the countdown to the 5 December Nasrec showdown begins.

The important aspect this year will be giving young people a platform to learn and showcase their talents. “We wanted it to be inclusive for young people,” said Lennox Zama Qambi, Director of the Soweto Festival Expo.

“We are bringing it back to the people. We are a country full of creatives and we are saying come show us your films. Come learn from other local film makes as well. Before, the Soweto Festival Expo was just an exhibition, but it’s grown, we have almost 10 different community inclusive initiatives at the festival now. We want the people of Soweto to benefit from this. The street vendors, we’re saying come and sell your food at the festival.”

Qambi was speaking at the expo’s media briefing hosted at Sakhumzi Restaurant in Orlando West on Wednesday. The Expo, which is already underway featured a morning walk in Chiawelo on Tuesday as a celebration for President Cyril Ramaphosa, who spent a period of his youth in Soweto.

This weekend film lovers can look forward to the iconic Soweto Film Festival at Maponya Mall on the 22nd. The next stop is the Top 8 soccer Challenge on the 28th to be hosted at Sharp Jabavu Stadium in the Maskandi vs Jazz festival showdown where the sport will meet music.

Just the following day, on the 29th all eyes will be on the Soweto 7 Colors Festival. Before the last stop before the Nasrec will be the Soweto Indigenous Food and Bev Festival on the 3rd and 4th of December at Maponya Mall. This leg of the festival aims to promote traditional food and beverages. Rapper Siya Shezi is expected to make an appearance.


Rapper, Siya Shezi will be one of the performers at tbe Soweto Indigenous Food and Bev Festival leg of the Expo.

Other highlights of the Expo include the Soweto Awards and the Soweto Golf Challenge. The Expo will also look to tackle social issues such and Gender-Based Violence via debates between young people.

“People who never thought they could be able to sell their food at Maponya Mall will be able to sell for the Soweto Festival, People who never thought they would sell their clothes at Maponya Mall can sell their clothes through the Soweto Festival. The festival is meant to uplift, promote, and celebrate the people of Soweto, and we ask everyone to come to join us,” concluded Qambi.
