“No SWL football until 2121,” says SAFA

SAFA's head of the competition, Victor Raletjena, confirmed what had mostly been rumors prior, that the season would be abandoned.

After months of anxious waiting, countless debates and discussions to find a way forward, SAFA has reached a consensus to null and void the 2020 Sasol Women’s League season. The 2020 season, which kicked off in March came to an abrupt halt due to imposed regulations as part of South Africa’s strategy to limit the spread of Covid-19 under the Disaster Management Act.

SAFA’s head of the competition, Victor Raletjena, confirmed what had mostly been rumors prior, that the season would be abandoned.

“It has become a common cause that it was no longer feasible to continue the 2020 season that was hit by the Covid – 19 pandemic,” a letter circulated to clubs reads.
The decision was welcomed by supporters, many of whom, who felt to continue would do more harm than good.

“Many of these players are in school, a lot of them are writing their exams and trying to save the academic year, so I understand the decision to cancel the season. If it was the National League, then yes, maybe we could consider a later date, but as things stand, it was just not worth it,” said Kenny Makabate, a football lover in Klipspruit.

Katleho Lebusa, a DK ladies supporter and regular at the Nike Football Centre in Soweto, said she would have like to see more of her team but welcomed the decision.
“They (DK Ladies) started on the wrong foot and were gradually finding their form when the league was stopped. I would have liked to see them play a few more games, but it is understandable why they would cancel it,” said Lebusa.

DK ladies, a debutant in the Sasol Women’s League, would have also hoped for a longer season. The team from Diepkloof started their campaign with a loss to UP Tuks before taking another beating from Soweto Fabulous. Even so, both performances showed signs of class and gave their supporters enough reason to believe the youthful team would find their feet in the league.

SAFA has proposed the 6th of February 2021 for the start of the new 2021 season.
