Decades of waiting rewarded as 176 title deeds are handed over to Pimville and Klipspruit residents

Some broke into songs of jubilations, while others could not hold back the tears.

176 beneficiaries of the housing project could finally breathe a sigh of relief as their title deeds were handed over this morning.

Johannesburg MMC for housing, Mlungisi Mabaso presided over the handing-over ceremony hosted at the Orlando East Community Hall earlier today.

Mabaso apologized for Mayor Makhubo’s absence due to urgent matters before proceeding to hand out the title deeds.

Some broke into songs of jubilation, while others could not hold back the tears. 68-year-old Johanna Mogagabe had waited over 20 years to finally call her home hers.

“Yoh! Nginekwami!( I have a home!)” the Pimville resident sighed.

“Over the years, I have run up and down offices and they always told me ‘It’s coming mama’, so see it today, finally in my hands, to hold my title deed. I don’t know what to say,” she continued.

The MMC also traveled to Pimville to visit elderly beneficiaries who could not make the trip to Orlando and personally, deliver the title deeds.

“Its been 10 years, my worry was what happen would to my children and grandchildren if I die?” Said Nompucuko Bambiso shortly after receiving the title deed to her home.

“Now I can proudly say I have a home to call mine. My children have a home. If anything should happen, they always have this home. I am beyond happy.”

Although the handover was a step in the right direction for the City, thousands more are still with title deeds. The City has vowed to continue with issuing more title deeds and Mabaso himself was not under any illusion about the mammoth task before him.

“We know we have a massive backlog, and we are working around the clock. No person in the City of Johannesburg will be without a title deed. We are committed to this mission,” the MMC told residents.
