local artist Toto Mtobo released a GBV awareness song titled ‘Stop Killing our girls’

Artist uses his voice to address GBV.

Having witnessed the brutality of a woman being beaten up and feeling powerless, local artist Thokozani Dubazane known as Toto Mtobo released a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness song titled ‘Stop Killing our girls’.

He explained that the song was released in 2017 after the brutal murder of Karabo Mokoena. He did not pay much attention to songs but people kept on insisting that he must work on it as it was informative and addressed the social ills faced by the country.

Hearing about the brutal murder of Tshegofatso Pule, Toto had a flashback of what he witnessed years back and decided to re-do the song. Mtobo believes that music has the power to communicate and get an important message to the masses.

Seeing, hearing, and reading about the recurring issues of GBV made the artist put all his time and effort into remaking the song. It took him a whole four months to work on the song.
“This thing has been happening even in the past but now it’s becoming worse. I took my time to work on the song,” he said.

On the song, he has worked with the likes of Seedmo, Lin Dough (Daddy ka Valdo), Moabi Kotu, Sonke Mazibuko, and Ntu2ko.

He felt that the song alone would not be loud enough and decided to brand the title of the song on t-shirts with the hope that perpetrators will be able to read the bold words and get the message.

The song has two versions which are a male version and a female version. Mtobo explained that the one he just released is a male version and he wants a man to unite and address the issue of GBV because he feels that when the issue is addressed by a man we can see positive results.
