MMC Mpho Moerane warn about the danger of illegal connections

Illegal connections claimed a child’s life.

The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) Councillor Mpho Moerane would like to warn residents who reside in informal settlements against the dangers of illegal connections.

This is following a tragic incident that happened in Kanana where 9 years old child was electrocuted to death after being exposed to underlying cables that run past his family shack.
Not only do illegal connections cost the City millions in lost revenue, but they are also a danger to human lives, especially children.

Moerane said City Power will intensify the cut-off of illegal connections across the City while continuing with an education drive about the dangers of vandalism and illegal connections.

He urged councilors and other community leaders to assist with addressing the issue at hand. Moerane extended his condolences to the family of the young victim of Kanana.

The MMC said The City is engaging with other departments to ensure that informal settlements receive essential services, including legal electricity.

Moerane raised concerns about the increase of vandalism and theft of government Infrastructure across the regions things such as Streetlights

“I am appealing to law enforcement agencies to assist in ensuring that the perpetrators are found and brought to book. We also appeal to the communities to report any acts of vandalism they witness around their areas to the police,” concluded Moerane.
