Kliptown police with community safety visited rape victims around their precinct

Rape victim’s hope revived.

Kliptown police together with Community Safety embarked on a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Campaign where they were visiting rape victims around their precinct.

The campaign was led by the newly appointed station commander, Colonel Hennie Jones, and HOD of Community Safety in Gauteng Sipho Thenjekwayo.
Amongst the attendees was Councillor of Ward 25 Rayneth Moabi, several pastors, and different organizations that deal with GBV cases in the area.

Upon arrival in each house, a limited number of people including social workers and investigating officers were allowed to get inside to give an update on each case and allow victims to ask questions where they need clarity.

While those who were left outside were busy holding a prayer/ candlelight session and raising awareness on the issue of GBV.

Moabi feels that women need to be taught certain skills that will help them defend themselves against potential abusers.

“We have campaigns year in year out but instead of having a decreased number of cases we have an increase,” she said.

Themba Lukhela explaining to the attendees about GBV.

She stated that women are attacked because they are defenceless. She emphasised that both young and old women need skills to protect themselves.

Thenjekwayo said they were visiting the families to give them an update and inform them on which resources they can use to win these cases.
He added that this is their way of giving the families hope and encourage them not to lose hope.

“We need the community to help the police deal with GBV. We have a problem with people reporting and withdrawing cases,” he said.

He urged people not to be afraid to report GBV cases because that’s the only way they can stop the killings and abuse of women.

Jones said as a station they regard GBV cases as a very serious issue and he promised an 80 percent arrest of the perpetrators. He said they will be going back to the houses to support and help them through their journey.
