Midas Sports Development which is based in Eldorado Park has been nominated for the Community Project of the Year Award in the Johannesburg Women in Sports Awards.

The development is one of three organisations nominated for the award. On Monday, October 5, the finalists attended the award ceremony, and even though Midas Sports Development did not win the award, the nomination alone is something they can be proud of.

“We have been working since 2015 on the structure and infrastructure of the development and it was dominantly accommodating boys but with the Covid-19 pandemic, we sat down and decided to fix up the place. We now have included girls and the numbers to boys to girls is 30% to 70% having more girls in our development,” said the chairman of Midas Sports Development, Zayd Fredericks.

“This goes in the sporting codes of netball, hockey, and football, especially with the young girls. We are planning to run a small-sided game amongst them in terms of development for girls. We are starting right from the bottom to build and develop the girls in sport. That is where the nomination came in because we had zero girls and now, we are growing. I think that we didn’t win because we are in the development stage and just when we wanted to start, the Covid-19 pandemic hit.”

Kgopotso Mathunyane who is the media liaison officer for the awards explained that the criteria for nominations in the community project of the year were reviewed for the period from August 1, 2018, to July 2020.

He added that the project had to focus on the development of girls and also prove impact on community development as well as community empowerment all focused around the girl child.

Fredericks added: “Our center is a purpose-built center for the community by the community where we want to develop through sports. We want to use sport as the vehicle to develop all our

players and also develop them in mathematics, life skills, agriculture, recycling and just teaching them to live clean and this will all be for the betterment of our community and society at large. Children who come through our system will be better at being productive in society.”
