SAUNO set to tackle some social ills affecting Eldorado park residents

SAUNO paving the way for the unemployed.

A  meeting was held in extension 9 by the South African Unemployed National Organisation (SAUNO) to introduce themselves to the community and find out what social ills affect residents.

Pastor Sharon Herbst explained: “The organisation is non-political, non-racial, non-sexist, and we stand for the people. We are a whole nation that is suffering so we will be working with different communities. Some of us are healthy and fit enough to work but there are no jobs. We are the invisible nation especially us between the ages of 35 and 59. There are a lot of people in this age group who have young children in school, and in order to put food on the table, they wash people’s clothes, clean yards and some even sell drugs to make money for their families.”

The chairman of SAUNO added: “We had a very successful meeting with residents from Eldorado Park, ‘Kerse Dorp’. We were with Pastor Carol Johnson as our deputy chairperson, Michelle Meyers as our treasurer, and Sharon Herbst as our deputy treasurer.

“One major issue that really disturbed us was that a lot of families have been broken because parents are unable to provide for their families so the children go astray. There are also many youngsters with matric certificates but they cannot find jobs.”

“There is also a lack of skills, so we would like to invite the government to come on board so that people can have the skills to qualify for jobs. It is about time that we stop looking at the race. We need to help each other, we are all from one race and that is the human race. We cannot sit back and continue to watch while the affairs of the country are being decided by a few people.

Our aim as SAUNO is to mobilise, organise, and position the people so that they can equally benefit from projects and initiatives that are aimed at addressing the injustices of the past.”

Herbst shared that the following issues were addressed in the community: “The high unemployment rate, housing issues, the electricity issues in our area, people’s rates and taxes that are very high. We also discussed drugs, poverty, and Gender-Based Violence in the community. There are no spiritual teachings at our schools and we need to bring that back.”

According to Herbst, the organisation would like to schedule another meeting in a different part of Eldorado Park so that they can hear all the needs in the community.
