Wall mural launched in Orlando West to promote responsible drinking

These murals were created by local Illustrator, graphic designer, and art director Kgabo Mametja.

The South African Breweries (SAB) in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government unveiled a wall mural in Soweto as part of their #RESPONSIBLETOGETHER campaign which is aimed at creating awareness about the impact of the irresponsible use of alcohol.

The mural which is designed by local Illustrator, graphic designer, and art director Kgabo Mametja is the first in a series that is set to be unveiled across the Gauteng province as part of this educational campaign.

The #RESPONSIBLETOGETHER campaign is aimed at addressing toxic behaviours associated with the abuse of alcohol, including binge drinking, drunk driving, underage drinking, and Gender-Based Violence.

It comes at a time when people are celebrating the lift of many lockdown restrictions and the approaching December holiday season.

Senior Corporate Affairs Manager at SAB Kgosi Mokgotsi said in the past couple of months there has been a lot of challenges as a result of Covid-19 and they have learned from them.

He said they have a lot to do in order to promote the responsible consumption of alcohol. Mokgotsi went on to state that the #RESPONSIBLETOGETHER campaign is a step in the right direction towards communicating messages of responsible alcohol consumption and trading.

“Our experience through the national pandemic has taught us the importance of communicating with our communities more effectively in a way and style which they appreciate and understand,” said Mokgotsi.

Amongst the attendees of the launch was MEC for Gauteng Social Development Morakane Mosupyoe who recalled when alcohol was banned during level 5 of lockdown and again during level 4 because of the rise in the number of trauma cases at hospitals allegedly coursed by alcohol-related incidents.

“We were then advised that we should work together to convey the message to the people about responsible drinking,” the MEC said.

Gauteng Liquor Board’s Raymond Martin supports the campaign and believes that the safety of the people of this country continues to be government’s number one priority as the battle against COVID-19 continues.
He said, “There is a need for a collective and organised reaction from all relevant actors across government, civil society, and private sector. Regarding this latest campaign with SAB, the chosen locations for the murals are places where this message will have the highest social impact as well as where responsible behaviour is of the highest importance. We are pleased to have played a role in the #RESPONSIBLETOGETHER campaign.”

The MEC together with SAB’s Senior Corporate Affairs Specialist Zoleka Lisa unveiled the wall mural with the message ‘As’bhekelaneni’ which is one of 36 in Gauteng.

The murals will be displayed in areas with high traffic volumes, for maximum impact across the province in areas such as the City of Ekurhuleni, City of Tshwane, West Rand and the City of Johannesburg.

Local Illustrator, graphic designer Kgabo Mametja explaining about why they choose such design where he stated that it is because people can see it from afar because it looks like the words are coming out.
