Bayede conquers his drug addiction

The recovering drug addicts abused nyaope for close to 12 years.

Bongani Bayede (30) from Pimville speaks out about his journey in fighting drug abuse and how he managed to beat it.

Bayede who was cornered by nyaope which is a drug that ruins a lot of people’s lives in the hood. It all started when he smoked weed trying to prove to his friends that he is street smart and it later developed into an addiction.

The recovering drug addicts abused nyaope for close to 12 years. Growing up in a strict family did not stop Bayede from doing what he thought was life. When his addiction grew he started stealing from his family.

“I started becoming abusive towards my family to the extent that I would steal my grandmother’s pension money just to feed my craving,” said Bayede.

He is one of the people who have been to rehab countless times but because he was not willing to quit drugs he would relapse and go back to his old ways.

After years of smoking drugs, he decided to quit and he recalls of the day he walked to a tranquility clinic without his family knowing.

“Although my legs were painful because of the drugs, I told myself I needed to do this and not look back,” he said.

After coming out of rehab Bayede wanted to back to his community but he felt scared to face his people. His encounter with Shaun Twala really helped him face his fear.

Bayede felt that he needed to do something for his community that where he formed the Livelihood Referral agency which is aimed at taking drug addicts to school, score them learner ships and help them face the community again. He urged the community to unite and fight against the drug before it’s too late.
