Netball teams battle it out at the Diepkloof tennis court

The newly refurbished Diepkloof Zone 1 tennis court is proving how much residents missed sports. The facility is already hosting tournaments and the past long weekend saw the action-packed Ruff Ryder Netball Tournament kicking off at the facility.

The tournament saw ten teams from all over Soweto vying for the title of champions, with different divisions, four teams for U21, four teams for U19, two teams for U13, U15, and U17.

The three-day tournament kicked off on Heritage Day, September 24 with the finals being played on Saturday, September 26. Founded by Mojalefa Xaba, Thanyana Ratshirumela, and Scornish, the tournament’s purpose was to unearth local talent, at the same time bringing back the vibe previously stolen by the Corona Virus and its lockdown restrictions for the past months.

The ten netball teams battling for the title were, Seven Stars, Peace Makers, Happy Hearts, Palmridge, Mighty Galaxy, Panthers, Soweto Santos, Girls Rock, Orlando Real Starts, and Juventus. The action-packed finals saw Seven Stars’ U21 team claiming victory and being crowned champions, Peace Makers being crowned runners-up and in the third place was Happy Hearts.

For the U19 division, Peace Makers have crowned champions, second place was Soweto Santos and Palmridge was in the third place. Girls Rock took the U17 crown and second place was Orlando real stars.

Girls Rock celebrated again, taking the crown for the U15 division and again Orlando Real Stars was second place and Girls Rock indeed, the team claimed victory once again for the third time in the U13 division with Juventus in the second place.
