Generosity changes the life a resident in Eldorado Park

Katrina Phyllis was in desperate need of a wheelchair.

“The day when we gave her the wheelchair, I can’t even put into words but she was very emotional, she made me and Danny cry, she was just so thankful,” these were the words of Romain Alves, a community worker and ward committee member of Ward 18.

Alves shared the story of how a generous resident donated a wheelchair to another who was in need. “I am a community worker so I met Katrina Phyllis and she was waiting for a wheelchair for the last two years. I kept on walking and asking people, I even approached non-profit organisations but there is a long waiting list for people who are in need of wheelchairs.

“Just this one day, a man by the name of Danny Carney contacted me regarding another issue in extension 2 where he lives. Once we sorted that issue out, he also said that he has a wheelchair to donate to someone in need. I said this has to be God-sent because every time I went to the lady, she would cry and tell me that she can’t move around, when she sends people to the shops for things that she needs, they do not come back with her money.

“She also told me that it’s a problem to receive her grant money. She has gangrene and the doctors already amputated her toes and then her ankle. The hospital gave her a walker but it was difficult for her to go to the shops with it, she was in desperate need of a wheelchair,” said Alves.

According to the website https://www.mayoclinic.org/: gangrene refers to the death of body tissue due to either a lack of blood flow or a serious bacterial infection. Gangrene commonly affects the extremities, including your toes, fingers, and limbs, but it can also occur in your muscles and internal organs.

“I would like to thank Danny Carney because I really am grateful that he donated this wheelchair which is really helping Katrina.

I would like to say that as a community worker if anyone who needs help, they can contact me, and even if I cannot assist, I will refer them to the correct entities,” concluded Alves. You can contact Romain Alves on 084 478 6317.
