Protea South Upgrading Informal Settlement Programme (UISP) underway

Protea South shacks might be a thing of the past.

The people from Protea South who are anticipating to own their own RDP Houses one day must have had their hopes reignited during the Upgrading Informal Settlement Programme (UISP) at Protea South Multi-Purpose Hall that clarified all of their burning questions.

The UISP’s objectives were made clear for the people on the pamphlets each attendee was handed, Walter Rachidi of LimGroup Consulting Services explained how usually, just the planning process from the time a town planner begins planning till the first day of the inception of the building may take up to 24-36 months.

Rachidi elaborated the things that go into determining if an area would work as a township, he even made an example about Alexandra and how people would rent out their RDP houses because they turned out to be far from their workplaces, he said, ” And we haven’t even started planning the layout for Protea South yet, but we guarantee you that the entire settlement will be upgraded.”

The councilor for the area, Joseph Matjila was present at the hall as well during the UISP and he helped answer some of the people’s questions as well he said, “We should all start taking responsibility as the people from the community for the problems that we face in our community.”

One of the problems that the community is facing is the multiplication of shacks caused by people who erect or either run businesses that erect more shacks in the community on any given day.

For example; the estimated number of households that have already been accounted for is One thousand and eighty-six households/Shacks, (1086), whilst since then, the number has almost tripled to approximately Four thousand 4000 shacks.

Joseph Matjila and Walter Rachidi get insight.

Patricia Nkosi from the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) graced the Programme with her insight, she explained why building some other townships could take time and the factors that determine whether it would be safe or not for people to be built a township at certain geographic areas by the municipality.

Household surveys will be conducted to establish the actual number of structures, the actual population, the community special needs, livelihoods and to simply develop a programme based on accurate information, Rachidi explained that this process which will have everyone who resides in the area registered on the system is intended to make sure that the number of built households and the number of people correlates.
