Nike Football Training Centre to get a revamp

The Nike Training Centre will receive an overhaul that will open doors to sporting codes beyond football.

Nike has revealed its plans to revamp its Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto.

The Nike Training Centre was opened in 2010 ahead of the FIFA Soccer World Cup and has since become a destination for footballers from all over South Africa. With the sport growing in South Africa, Nike decided to evolve the facility from a single sports facility to a multi-sport center.

The Nike Training Centre will receive an overhaul that will open doors to sporting codes beyond football. The facility aims to become an ignition point for the next generation of athletes, increase female sport participation, and create a safe space for female athletes.

The new multi-purpose center will provide the community with a 1.5 km running track that gives professional and aspiring athletes a space to hone their discipline. In addition, athletes will have access to a training studio, a dance studio as well as a skate park to fuel the burgeoning skate culture in Johannesburg.

Two FIFA-accredited football fields and two small-sided fields play stage to young footballers.

A big part of Soweto is its creativity and the facility will have to boast impressive workshop rooms that will promote Soweto’s creative community.

The workshops will be led by various creatives and sports personalities.

The new center will be powered by a strong Nike collective including athletes, trainers, choreographers, celebrated football coaches, and local sports fraternities.

The Nike Training Centre will be closed for renovations from 14 September and will reopen in the second quarter of 2021.
