Monica Mpho Masia(21) more than just a pageant queen

Using beauty and brains to make an impact.

The 21-year-old Monica Mpho Masia from Soweto in Green Village has always been using her talents and natural beauty to impact the people around her. The young and beautiful model considers herself a considerable entrepreneur, a considerate philanthropist who gets up to lend a helping hand, and a feminist, because of her strong belief and faith in women having the capacity to positively move the world.

Masia started modeling from as soon as she was in nursery school, then primary school, she explained her connection to modeling thus, “After scooping the 1st princess prize early on in my life, I realized how much I loved modeling and how much of an impact I could have in society as a model.”

No young model could have felt prouder than Masia after she won her first princess title because that was her first-ever big beauty pageant to participate in, she said, “Ever since then, I have never stopped aspiring to be a world-renowned model nor have I ever looked back.”

Some would say that the star striking beauty from Green village is one of the reasons why their community is always so green, for her Beauty is a breath of fresh air, not only that, she is also currently one of the finalists for the Mr and Miss Tshwane Region 7 National Pageant, taking place in Bronkhospruit on October 31.

Masia said, “I’m looking forward to my upcoming pageant because if I win it, bigger doors are set to open up.”

The winner of the Mr and Miss Tshwane Region 7 National Pageant will be given the chance to represent the country, their communities, and themselves at an international beauty pageant competition, and Masia who must feel like she’d been preparing for the big shot all her life said, “I am very anxious about the opportunity that is up for grabs yet I am very enthused, nothing can stop me.”

Masia explained in depth how she sternly believes that modeling is not just about being beautiful and strolling the fashion ramp, but how it can teach, groom, and motivate individuals to dream big and have the courage to always take action towards their goals and never to throw in the towel.

Masia lost a few pageants as a kid, before actually beginning her winning streak, she never let that stop her, she said, “No matter how many times I’ve lost beauty pageants, I’ve always picked myself up and dusted myself and went for more. That’s one of the reasons why I am so passionate about modeling, it taught me how to tackle obstacles and challenges and never to give up.”

Pageantry has given Masia the platform to express herself and give back to her community and also neighboring communities; She has worked with the Leave-a-Mark Foundation, donating clothes to people from the community. She has also worked for hand in hand with Stage Rockers Modelling Academy practicing her philanthropy, visiting orphanages and soup kitchens.

Masia said, “Out of all the things that I have done so far because of pageantry, it has availed me the platform to start my own initiatives, something very close and dear to my heart.”

The 21-year-old entrepreneur/model started an initiative called Hope for Bonolo Nursery where she’s worked with the founder for Bonolo Nursery for the Disabled to organize the kids a closing party to cheer them up, amongst the gracious things she has done during her journey as a model.

She concludes, “I intend to grow in the modeling industry and execute more initiatives with the aim of running my own foundation that really helps the unfortunate one day. Above being a runway model, I’d like to also venture out into being a fashion model who breaks the height status quo. Dynamite comes in small packages.”
