The young club has two teams.

Golden Warriors Football Club FC is a team based in Riverlea Extension. The team was formed in 2018 under the leadership of the then Africa Sun Oil Refineries workers representative forum chairperson Alphias Zunidza.

“The team’s home grounds are in Riverlea Extension which is now dubbed Stamford Bridge by soccer-loving residents because of the new blue and white kit which resembles the English Premier League team Chelsea FC,” said Zunidza.

The young club has two teams which are the U19 consisting of young players from the age of 15 and the senior team which is Captain by Manex Mare also known as Mandzukic. “We have played many games and the players have managed to demonstrate that they are a force to be reckoned with.

This has been proven by the number of people who are now following the team whenever we play.” “Our wish is that one day be able to have teams from all age groups teaching them football techniques and discipline.

As you know football is one of many languages people can understand easily. It is our quest to walk hand in hand with the community that we live in to achieve this dream.

Our main aim is to join the local league of which we are already pursuing and we have engaged with the director of Thames FC,
Craig van Doorsen who has been an inspiration to us.

He is helping us with ideas and we would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the way he has been engaging with us,” shared Zunidza. The chairman added that due to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations, all games have been put on hold until further notice. The club is also encouraging citizens to follow the lockdown regulations during these times.

Zunidza concluded by saying: “Nelson Mandela once said in one of his popular speeches that sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way nothing else can, it speaks to the youth and the old, sport can create hope where there is despair.”
