Man(29) arrested for stolen vehicle in Protea North

Tracker’s efforts to combat vehicle crime resulted in 5447 vehicle recoveries, 819 arrests, and 39 firearms recovered for the twelve months from July 2019 to June 2020.

Another 29-year-old was arrested by the local police in Protea North after he was found cruising in a car that did not belong to him.

The police were apparently patrolling the area, ensuring that no crime went unnoticed when they picked up tracking from a stolen car.

The stolen car was a White VW Polo and it was report stolen in Cleveland sometime last month.

The communications Officer for Protea Glen SAPS, Sergeant Vincent Mashiteng said, “After the tracker went on, the police traced the car until they spotted it in Protea North where it was found with the young man.”

Sergeant Mashiteng narrated how the 29-year-old was driving in the car that was reported stolen and when asked where and when he got the car and most importantly how the young man choked in speechlessness.

Needless to say that the young man was then taken into custody for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

According to Ron Knott-Craig, Executive Operational Services at Tracker SA said, “With the latest statistics indicating that hijacking can happen on any day of the week and at any time, it is clear that criminals are taking advantage of opportunistic situations and it is therefore imperative to always remain vigilant.”

Mashiteng said, “An investigation is underway to determine if the 29-year-old suspect is linked to the theft case that was opened in Cleveland.”

The suspect is held in police custody and he is set to appear at the Protea Magistrate Court.
