Empowering young women in sport

Celebrating a woman of virtue.

We are still in a month where we celebrate phenomenal women who are doing great in terms of grooming the younger generation like Dumisani Chauke, a netball fanatic who grew up in Limpopo.

Chauke’s career began back at her home in Mgangeni Primary School in Malamulele. She said she has always loved taking part in different sporting codes.

“There was a day when the netball team was short of a player and I had to fill in. At the time I wasn’t too familiar with the sport and didn’t know what to do. The instruction that I was given to me was that I should stand in the center, take the ball and shoot,” recalled Chauke.

The former netball player said she did it and they won which marked the beginning of her career in sports. Chauke played for Limpopo schools netball teams, made it to South Africa (SA) under 16 teams in 2002 and She also played for the senior national team.

Chauke said in June 2015 she focussed more on coaching with the SA under 21 where they were preparing for the netball youth world cup in 2017 where she was an assistant coach.

She addressed the issue of inequality in a sport where she made a practical example of Banyana Banyana’s achievements where she feels that they were not properly celebrated.

Chauke said as women in sport they do not get the same appreciation that the male sports players get.

She founded Dumisani Chauke netball foundation to assist in raising young woman in sports and to empower them through netball.

She is amongst the women worthy to be celebrated during this month for her contribution in making a difference in South Africa.
