The Destiny Leadership Academy had a relaunch of the ‘Grow your Life Library’

The library is for everyone in the community.

The Destiny Leadership Academy had a relaunch of the ‘Grow your Life Library’ at their new premises behind Eldorado Park Secondary School. According to Dr. Cynthia Oliphant who is president and founder of Woman of Destiny and the owner of the Destiny Management Group, the organisation is working in collaboration with Midas Sports Development Programme to have the library in the community.

“We had a relaunch of the library because the library is not entirely new, we just moved from Extension 1 now to this premises. The library is for everyone in the community; adults, and children. ‘Read and Reach your Destiny’ was the theme of the event. It doesn’t matter if you are in academics, sports, or the arts, it’s always important to know how to read.

“Sportspeople need to know how to read their contracts and to be able to become entrepreneurs. We are trying to encourage literacy that is why we brought the two young authors to show others that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can achieve great things,” said Oliphant.

The guest speakers at the relaunch were:  Zac Dooms (9) from Eldorest Primary School and Dianon John (9) who both wrote books and one published theirs when they were 8 years old.

Alanzo Oliphant who is a private pilot shared that he thought that the sky is the limit until he took to the sky and found that the sky has no limit. Other speakers were first-year medical students; Lamont Oliphant and Rian Stevens who does computer programming, they are Destiny Leadership Academy Maths and Science tutors who motivated the guests who were present.

Oliphant added that to also celebrate Women’s Month, they had Eloise Scobal who is the author of Samurai Bribe as the keynote speaker.

“All of our guest speakers are from Eldorado Park, this is to show that we also have talent from our community. I hate the saying ‘if you want to hide anything from a black person, put it in a book’ I have something to say about that, we are not only the people who will search the books for knowledge but we are the ones who will write those books. The library is not just a white elephant but it can be your office that you can work in, you can come research, gain knowledge, get some peace and quiet.

“The residents should come to make use of the library; it is not just here to look pretty,” explained Oliphant.

The dream for the organisation is to one day have laptops where residents can use the digital side for researching but for now, they just have books which does not need data or electricity but you can gain so much from it.

The library books cater to everyone in the community and the sponsor of this library is a company called ‘Chabad’ who according to Oliphant, sponsored the containers and got other sponsors to donate everything else.

In the future, the organisation would like to work on Spelling Bee Competitions and more programmes for the community. The operating hours of the library (which is based on the grounds behind the Eldorado Park Secondary School) are from 9 am to 4 pm only during the week with a librarian; Diana Beesteboer for all to visit.
